Now that the sun has popped its head out from behind the clouds (albeit not for long before the drizzle recommenced!), I’m starting to crave spring cuisine – barbecued meat, baguettes, risotto, etc. In fact, I’ve got the perfect Argentinian wine to match a nice Bacon and Brie Baguette: The Kaiken Malbec Blend 2008.
A Kaiken is a Patagonian goose which frequents both sides of the Andes Mountains, enjoying what nature has to offer and migrating to the other side as necessary. The wines are named after this wild goose, as the winemaker Aurelio Montes flies back and forth between Chile and Argentina, mirroring the behaviour of the Kaikens.
The renowned Chilean winemaker has concocted his “corte” (or blend) using selected fruit from a number of vineyards in Agrelo and Uco Valley.
Deep ruby and violet coloured, this distinctive and captivating wine has several dimensions to it. The Malbec gives the wine soft structure with powerful aromas of violets and dry plums. The Bonarda contributes soft tannins, whilst the Petit Verdot adds strength and body. Finally 7 months ageing in French oak gives spicy touches to the plum and berry backbone of the wine, demonstrating an elegant balance between fruit and oak.
This concentrated and complex wine is full bodied, bursting with fruit flavour, boasts bold acidity, ripe sweet tannins and an enduring finish. It is delightfully versatile and could easily be matched to pizza, pasta, pork chops or lamb. For a more unusual pairing try with Porcini Mushroom Risotto, or indeed that Brie and Bacon Baguette!
This wine is a celebration of what Argentina has to offer and is on a great deal at just £7.49 when you buy two or more bottles (£8.99 individual price). Get yourself in the Spring mood and try out some of the great food matches!
