Finally an en primeur release of one of the top wines, one that we are very confident about and unhesitatingly recommend. Chateau Batailley is an archetypal Pauillac – blackcurrant-scented with a fresh mid-weight character. Key to its attraction is this freshness. It is a drink rather than an academic exercise after all.

2009 Château Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac
£264 per 12 bottle case in bond
On the nose, a lifted, floral edge lends appeal to dark berry fruit. A more concentrated Batailley than the norm, this vintage offers good, solid berry fruit, soft-skinned and fully ripe. Not lacking in substance, with a pleasing vibrant accent and well-expressed tannin. A successful, persistent Batailley in a classic style. Drinking: 2015-2025
