Simon, Manager of Majestic Bangor tells us about a shock discovery.
We’ll admit it, we were a bit sceptical when we first saw that we were taking delivery of a sparkling Marlborough Sauvignon! We were ready to write it off without even giving it a chance. However, upon Rob’s insistence, we decided to chill a bottle down and give it a try – and we were more than pleasantly surprised!
Brancott Estate have taken a classic Kiwi Sav/Blanc – given it a twist, and it really has worked! They haven’t tried to mimic Champagne or Prosecco, they’ve simply given one of our favourite wines a lift. By using carbonation rather than bottle-fermentation, they haven’t added any of the yeasty, bready character that you get in Champagne/Cava etc – you just get a delicate sparkle – and the addition of a dash of Pinot Gris to the blend adds just the right amount of weight to the palate and avoids the need for cloying sweetness to balance the acidity.
You get a great whack of tropical fruits when you put your nose anywhere near the glass and the passion fruit, peach and citrus character follows onto the palate. Lovely crisp acidity and just the right amount of residual sugar to balance make this a really impressive wine on the palate – with those fine bubbles really heightening the flavours.
This is an absolutely perfect match for Fish & Chips with a big wedge of Lemon on the side! Give it a try, it surprised us and we’re always cynical about such developments in the wine-trade!
