Golden Grape: Toro Bravo of Spanish Wines

With Bull Fighting being banned in Catalonia from next year and with Sunday 2nd October 2011 marking the end of the season in Barcelona – no Spanish fighting bull, or Toro Bravo as the breed is known, will be seen in the city in the name of sport or art in the foreseeable future. With this in mind we asked our staff – What is your Toro Bravo of the wine world?

The clear winner was:

Viña Ardanza Rioja Reserva 2000/2001 La Rioja Alta

“One my aboslute favourite Rioja’s from arguabley the best sub region of Rioja. Subtle spice and leather characters wrap themselves around a rich core of stewed raisiny fruit that I love so much about great quailty Spanish wine!”

Rob, Manager of Majestic Winchester

And in 2nd place:

Emilio Moro 2006/2007 Ribera del Duero

“This wine is my personal favourite Spanish Wine across the board and to be fair to all the great Spanish producers, I’ve been lucky enough to taste a good few in my time at Majestic. Ribera del Duero the region itself carries a lot of expectation of quality and finesse. This wine turns all that expectation into belief with an ease and a kind of pride that you would expect. Full of Mocha, dark fruit, figs, plums and a hint of very dark South American coca combined with a smooth and silky integration of tannin from a clever and perfectly timed oak aging. That aging can only be achieved by the winemakers skill of American and French oak barrel blending pure genius. Brilliant !! Brilliant !! food matches a hearty meaty Tapas just like the kind we had in Galicia :)) I love it”

Dave, Assistant Manager of Majestic Chiswick

3rd place:

Rioja Reserva 2006 Marqués de Riscal

“The Marques de Riscal Reserva is a classic example of a standout Rioja at an affordable price. A seductive nose of ripe strawberries wonderfully accompanied by sweet vanilla conjures up memories of idyllic summer evenings. The palate follows on beautifully with the barrel ageing offering a complex cedar backdrop to the fresh strawberry fruit balanced by soft rounded tannins with a pleasant lightness. While the finish lingers on, memories of all the great occasions whereby the Riscal Reserva has been the soundtrack come flooding back, whether it be accompanying a succulent roast Lamb or enjoyed with friends! “

Stefan of Majestic Shrewsbury

4th place

Papa Luna 2009 Calatayud

“This Garnacha dominated blend from Calatayud recently won a Bronze Award in the Decanter World Wine Awards and what a worthy winner it is. Deep purple in colour, it shows vibrant aromas of spiced blackberries, sweet cherries and a hint of chocolate. The succulent palate follows on from the nose with rich, brambly fruit, supple tannins and full body, providing a lovely mouth feel. Would be delicious with duck in a blackberry sauce”

Becca, Manager of Majestic Shrewsbury

5th place

Rioja Reserva ‘Dos Maderas’ 2006 Beronia

“This Garnacha dominated blend from Calatayud recently won a Bronze Award in the Decanter World Wine Awards and what a worthy winner it is. Deep purple in colour, it shows vibrant aromas of spiced blackberries, sweet cherries and a hint of chocolate. The succulent palate follows on from the nose with rich, brambly fruit, supple tannins and full body, providing a lovely mouth feel. Would be delicious with duck in a blackberry sauce”

  1. Nowadays, the possibilities seem endless. One reason, I submit, is that with little access to the classically great wines, yet with a public thirst for greatness that far exceeds that of 30 years ago, importers, distributors, sommeliers and consumers themselves have been compelled to seek out wines that nobody paid attention to 25 years ago, if they even existed.
