Majestic York open again!

We were very excited to re-open Majestic York last month – four months after the floods forced its closure.  The first week was a week of celebration – tastings, fizz and fine wines open, delicious nibbles from local deli The Hairy Fig, competitions and 20% of in-store sales going to The York Flood Appeal.

If you haven’t heard the story, Majestic York flooded on 27th December, with most of the store 1.5m under water.  Once the store was accessible on 29th December, heroic efforts were made by Store Manager Jeff, his store colleagues and an emergency team to remove the water and clean up the store.

Definitely not a dry January for Majestic York!  It took five weeks for the store to dry out, only then could repair work start in early February.  The flooding caused a massive of damage; the store lost approximately £150,000 worth of wine and refurbishment costs exceeded £100,000.

Jeff Terry, who has been Store Manager of Majestic York since 2010, says:

“We went into the store after the water level receded; it was a real shock. Boxes everywhere, smashed bottles, sludge and the smell was awful. Between February and April, we were repairing and refurbishing the store. It is better than ever – lighter, smarter and with a swish new tasting area

Alongside the re-opening celebrations, 20% of the first week’s in-store sales have been donated to The York Flood Appeal.  Yesterday, Jeff and his team presented a cheque for £12,000 to Two Ridings Community Foundation.

Jan Garrill, Chief Executive of Two Ridings Community Foundation says:

“We’re delighted that Majestic is open again and we are extremely grateful for helping to raise funds for The York Flood Appeal.  With Majestic’s contribution, we can help even more people to get back on their feet and recover from the aftermath of the devastating floods.”

Thanks to the store’s customers for their patience whilst we were closed and even bigger thanks to those who visited during the first week.  It was great to join Jeff and his team on the opening day and I really enjoyed having a natter with the store’s neighbours and customers!
