It’s been a while since we did a round of our prestigious Golden Grape Awards, and with Malbec World Day (17th April) fast approaching we thought it was about time for another.
A quick reminder of what a Golden Grape Award is – we’re trying to make a definitive list of Majestic staff favourites for a variety of categories. First everyone nominates a wine, then the top 5 are short listed. Then there’s a round where all our stores can vote on the short listed wine, and the most popular wins the coveted title of Golden Grape…
We also want to know what you think! Last time we opened the Golden Grape poll up to the public, our customer favourite exactly mirrored our staff choice. Can it possibly happen again?
This time the topic is Mighty Malbec. Vote now and tell us which is your favourite – and if it’s not in the short list you can tell us why it should be!
The Short List
Benchmark Malbec made by the Catena family, whose name is synonymous with quality, showing ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruit flavours, subtle vanilla oak and plenty of peppery spice. Currently has an average customer rating of 4 stars out of 5 – what do you think?
This wine literally wraps itself around every corner of your mouth with its ripe dark plum fruits, sweet tannins and dark chocolate and mocha. Flavours linger for a long time. Average customer rating of 4.5 stars so beating Catena, but will that translate into success in the poll?
Possibly the best Malbec in the world? The International Wine Challenge certainly thought so last year, awarding this wine the trophy for the ‘International Malbec’ category. As yet unreviewed by any staff or customers this one is a bit of a mystery but could prove a strong contender.
This Malbec is awash with aromas of cherry, blackberry and touches of oaky spice – but has divided opinion and currently has an average customer rating of 3.5 stars. Do you think it deserves more credit?
Made by one of Argentina’s best winemakers, Roberto de la Mota, this is full of powerful aromas of violets, cherries and plums. With a solitary 4 star review at the moment, this is another dark horse in the competition.
If you’ve got a category you’d like us to vote on in the future, please pop your suggestions in a comment on this blog post. Happy voting!
