Last Saturday marked Saturday Kitchen’s 200th show. The shows wine experts are frequently popping into a Majestic store to find the perfect wine to match the incredible dishes the master-chef’s conjure up…
This week both Tim Atkin (MW) and the charming Olly Smith went to Majestic Summertown to find the ideal wine to accompany Vivek Singh’s Tandoori breast of pigeon, black lentils, kachumber salad and naan bread. Tim and Olly chose Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache 2008 from the Barossa Valley in South Australia.

This is a full-bodied version of Grenache, the Southern Rhône’s workhorse grape variety. It is attractive and ripe with blackberry and cranberry overtones and a pleasant herby finish. A good alternative to Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The previous week (19/11/10) on Saturday Kitchen saw actress Debra Stevenson facing her food heaven or hell. Thankfully her food heaven Lobster won the vote and James Martin and co. put together a culinery delight of homemade linguine with lobster sauce. Passoni Vernaccia di San Gimignano from Italy was chosen as the ultimate wine pairing.

This is an elegant, smooth and fruity wine with attractive aromas of cherry, violet and vanilla. On the palate there is good structure with fine tannins and plenty of sweet spice. Sangiovese is perfect with tomato based sauces so it can be enjoyed with a range of dishes.
