A few weeks ago I went along to the Wines of Argentina tasting held in London at Lord’s cricket ground. With the Argentinian Tasting Week starting tomorrow at every Majestic store, this was a great opportunity to meet some of the wineries whose wines are stocked at Majestic, as well as a refreshing reminder of what makes Argentinian wines that little bit special. I even managed to sneak a quick picture of Jancis Robinson (I did ask politely).
What did I try? Malbecs!
If I do have a vice, it’s my bias to Argentinian Malbec rather than going for something new. So an afternoon at Lords tasting tens of Argentinian Malbecs didn’t help that cause much. From all on show I most enjoyed the Mendel Malbec 2008 from Mendoza. This wine has always been a winner for me, and a chance to meet Anabelle from the winery and talk about the upcoming 2011 vintage (which looks promising!) always adds more character and meaning to the wine.
I also had the opportunity to speak to Diane from Viñalba. She explained Viñalba’s success since coming to the UK in 2008 and their relationship with Majestic. Now a firm favourite, Viñalba offers great consistency and style from Argentinian wines. The Malbec Touriga Nacional blend was my pick from their wines on show.
Buyer’s Choice: “Too many to mention! Love the La Posta Bonarda for something different, the new Viñalba Bordeaux Blend is an incredible wine, but the Umbral de los Tiempos is possibly the best Malbec I have tried this year.” Andy, the Majestic buyer for Argentina
Tweet of the Day: “The sun is hot hot hot in North London waiting for No.82 to take me to Lords for @winesofarg tasting.” Me, anticipating a good tasting.
Quote of the Day: “I’d love to have a tea plantation in the Himalayas – I’d grow Earl Grey.” Diane from Viñalba dreaming of away from the wine trade.
