For the Torres family, great winemaking and environmental protection are intrinsically linked. As co-founder Miguel Torres Vendrell put it; “there is no such thing as a good wine that does not respect nature”. Under this philosophy, their Bodegas Torres business, with wineries in Spain, Chile and California, is today setting the green standards for the other major players to follow.
From saving the Chilean condor to building schools in some of the world’s poorest communities, Torres’ sustainability credentials are many and varied. In all, they’ve set up more green projects than I have space to list here, but a brief rundown includes investing in green energy research, reforestation in Spain, introducing organic viticulture and recycling everything from water to grape skins. With all this in mind, it is no surprise that they have recently earned the impressive accolade of International Green Company of the Year in the 2010 Drinks Business Awards. For the Torres family, great winemaking and protecting the environment go hand in hand. It appears to be a winning strategy.
