Interview with Virginia Willcock

Q. How long have you been making wine in Margaret River?

A. 18 years – and I’ve loved every one of them.

Q. What is your favourite grape variety and why?

A. Cabernet Sauvignon. Perfume; tannin structure; intensity: it’s a beautiful variety and in our home town of Margaret River, we’re able to produce some of the world’s best.

Q. How do your vineyards differ from those in other wine-producing regions of the world?

A. Margaret River is a unique region. The combination of long, warm sunny days and beautiful cool afternoon sea breezes gives our wines fantastic elegance and finesse, but with incredible intensity and concentration of fruit.

Vasse Felix Group ShotQ. How much do vintages vary in Margaret River?

A. Surrounded by ocean on three sides, we have an amazingly consistent climate. Long, warm, dry summers and cold wet winters. There’s just enough variety to show vintage variation of course, but overall, it’s very consistent from year to year.

Q. Which closures do you use – natural cork, screwcap or synthetic cork?

A. Screwcap. I’ve had a gutful of corked and oxidised wines.

Q. If you could have a vineyard anywhere else in the world where would it be?

A. Sicily.

Q. Can you recommend your favourite food matches with your wines?

A. Homemade wood-fired pizza and Cabernet. Just perfect!
