What makes a memorable Christmas? Dressing the tree? A perfectly cooked Christmas dinner? Perhaps a spot of last-minute shopping mayhem? For Fine Wine Manager Clayton Smith it’s all about family and friends – great company with whom to share a bottle or two of good wine over a groaning table of food. See what treats Clayton has lined up for Majestic customers this Christmas…

ClaytonSmithIn the Smith household, we’re Christmas lunch traditionalists. Turkey with all the trimmings, followed by Christmas pudding and lashings of brandy custard. Last year I played it safe wine-wise and chose a Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru from Gagnard Delagrange and a Walter Hansel North Slope Pinot Noir. This year I may go a bit more unconventional. But what to choose? Having never learned my lesson from the annual high-street shopping debacle, I’m leaving it to the last minute to decide.

I hope you have a great Christmas. As always, you can email Adrian and me at finewine@majestic.co.uk or call 020 7604 3143 for any advice or answers you need. You’ll also find our full Fine Wine list at majestic.co.uk – there’s even a printable version to download and peruse at your leisure.

La Croix de Beaucaillou 2006, St-Julien
£25.00 £23.00* Special Offer!
A superb second wine from a prestigious second growth château, this has a bouquet of ripe summer berries, sweet cherries and earthy, herbaceous notes. It’s delicate on the palate and long in the mouth, with sumptuous red berry fruit, gentle tannins and balancing acidity, plus hints of plums and a lick of spice on the finish.

Château L’Arrosée 1999, St-Emilion Grand Cru Classé
A magnificent St-Emilion in its drinking prime. A stylish nose of plums, cherries, star anise, mocha and hints of dried rose petals spills seamlessly over onto the palate. Fruit flavours intensify the sweet essence of toasty new oak, providing a wonderful backbone for the soft tannins. Classy stuff!

Chassagne-Montrachet 2008 ‘Les Houllières’, Morey-Coffinet
Deliciously approachable with a refreshing bouquet of tropical and citrus fruits, minerals and a delicate whiff of toast. Soft and elegant in the mouth, it has an intense ripeness of fruit balanced by racy acidity. Perfect any time in the next couple of years.

Château La Croix de Gay 2002, Pomerol
Ooh la la! A knockout nose of raspberries, espresso and asphalt. Rich and full-bodied, its abundance of raspberry and cherry fruit mingle with delicious espresso flavours. The long finish has nuances of liquorice and tobacco. Can be drunk now or stashed away for 5 years for a real treat.

Amarone Classico 2006, Costasera Masi
£30.00 or £26.00* when you buy 2 bottles
An opulent nose of ripe red cherries, liquorice, sage, bitter chocolate, espresso and tar pave the way for a palate of equally epic proportions. Richly textured and very well-rounded, it has a sleek, refreshing finish – and will spend the next decade improving.

Brunello di Montalcino 2004/05, Il Poggione
£25.00 £23.00* Special Offer!
Brunello at its absolute best. A rich, intense nose of blackberries, liquorice, spice, coffee and a hint of leather rolls over onto the full-bodied, silky palate. The finish is wonderfully warm. At its best any time over the next decade.

Best wishes for the festive season.
