Domaine de Villargeau 2009, Coteaux du Giennois

Fact: From a small appellation bordering Pouilly-Fumé, this won a Silver Medal and ‘Great Value White Wine Trophy’ at the 2010 IWC.
Tasting Note: ‘The Villargeau 2009 Coteaux du Giennois represents sensational value such as few Sauvignon Blancs from any place can deliver. Redolent of ripe honeydew melon and pineapple with accents of snap pea, Szechuan pepper, and salt, this quite lushly-texture, luscious, yet pungent Sauvignon from flint-rich soil put me in mind – I admit – of a grape for which I have a notorious soft spot and proselytizer’s zeal, namely Gruner Veltliner. But don’t hold that against me or the Thibault brothers, as there are salinity and smoky pungency here peculiar to their grape and soil, and which one would be happy to derive from a Pouilly-Fumé costing twice the price.’
