Robert MondaviKat Barlow, Manager at Majestic Wine Greenwich, gives us the background on Robert Mondavi: a name synonymous with Californian Winemaking.

Napa Valley was one of the last regions to be developed in California. Despite this it is now arguably it’s most famous. Napa has undergone massive investment and has attracted pioneering winemakers, such as Robert Mondavi.

Mondavi Winery At SunriseIn 1968 Mondavi introduced the world to Fumé Blanc. It all started 2 years previously with a vineyard, a vineyard planted with a good crop of the particularly unpopular Sauvignon Blanc grape. It was not even Mondavi’s vineyard; it was however his success. Mondavi decided to buy this crop of Sauvignon Blanc from a local grower and have a little play around. The end result was a refined and dry wine reminiscent of the great Loire wines but with a big American twist – oak. It seemed only fitting that he dedicated this new style of wine to the French producers that had influenced its creation and thus the term Fumé Blanc was coined.

Barrels in the Mondavi CellarAlongside Fumé Blanc, Mondavi has created a portfolio of complex and delicious wines. These, based on international grape varieties, have also gained worldwide acclaim. His concentration on Cabernet Sauvignon and continual experimentation in the winery has led to joint ventures with many a respected winemaker, including the creation of Opus One with Baron Phillipe de Rothschild of Bordeaux.
