Jane MacQuitty’s best white wines for under £5

We were thrilled to see that Jane MacQuitty recommended 10 Majestic wines in her ’30 Best White Wines for under £5′ article in The Saturday Times on 6th March 2010, as well as awarding our Fairhall Cliffs Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand as a ‘Best Buy’. We couldn’t agree more – it currently heads up our ‘Top 10 Offers’ and is an absolute steal at £4.99.

Please note that stock availability of a couple of these wines is now low in some stores and so they are not listed on our website. Please contact your local store for availability in your area.

Here are Jane’s reviews of our wines:

2007 La Galine Chardonnay, Vin de Pays d’Oc, Vignobles Lorgeril, France

Cheap as chips French chardonnay from the Lorgeril family at Château de Pennautier with sufficient zippy peachy, lemon zest fruit to win through here.

2008 Grand Heron, Marc Ducournau, Vin de Pays des Côtes de Gascogne, France
£5.99 or £4.99 each if you buy 2*

Gorgeous Gascon white, bristling with zesty, herby, gooseberry and grapefruit fruit. A fine light apéritif and fishy first-course wine.

2008 Tre Cupole Grillo, Foraci, Sicily, Italy
£5.99 or £4.99 each if you buy 2*

Starry label, starry wine, with lots of rich, warm, honeyed, spicy, full-bodied fruit. Just what you’d expect from grillo, the grape behind marsala.

2008 Fiano, Settesoli, Sicliy, Italy
£6.49 or £4.99 each if you buy 2*

Cantine Settesoli has made rafts of elegant, tasty Sicilian wines, including this splendid apricot and peach-stashed, food-friendly white that closes on a pleasing, tangy, bitter, twist.

2009 Casillero del Diablo Pinot Grigio, Limari Valley, Chile
£7.49 or £4.99 each if you buy 2 until March 22

Forget dull-as-ditchwater, pricey Italian pinot grigio: try this sparky, lively, lemony, cut-price Chilean instead.

2008 Yarra Hills Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, Australia
£7.49 or £4.99 each if you buy 2*

Sunny, thirst-quenching, tropical fruit-charged chardonnay with fresh pineapple to the fore. Would that more Aussie whites were this classy.

2009 Estiba 1 Torrontés, Bodegas Esmeralda, Mendoza, Argentina
£6.99 or £4.99 each if you buy 2*

Not everyone’s glass of wine but Argentina’s answer to viognier is this richly aromatic spicy, lemony, musk peach-scented white made from the country’s indigenous torrontés grape.

2009 Las Moras Viognier, San Juan, Argentina
£5.99 or £4.99 each if you buy 2*

Turbo-charged, spicy, seductive hawthorn blossom and peach-stashed, 14%, dryish white, Argentina’s answer to winter Top 100’s sell-out Bellingham Hand-Picked Viognier star.

2009 Fairhall Cliffs Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (Best Buy)
£7.99 or £4.99 each if you buy 2*

British drinkers cannot get enough of Kiwi sauvignon, so thank goodness it’s goodbye to the evil, sweaty ’08s and hello to verdant, juicy, gooseberry and tropical fruit-laden ’09s just like this one.

2009 Azevedo Vinho Verde, Portgual
£6.24 or £4.99 each if you buy 2*

Delicious, sparky vinho verde with tongue-tingling floral lemon zest and aniseed spiked fruit: the perfect spring aperitif and fish white

*All prices (unless otherwise stated) are valid until April 26th and are subject to our minimum purchase of 12 bottles (any mix of wines, champagnes or spirits) online or 6 bottles if purchasing in store.
