Rediscovering Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc

Pedro from Majestic Wine Chiswick finds the Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc better than ever…

This has always been one of my favourite wines from the fashionable and prestigious region of Marlborough, in New Zealand. It’s crisp, refreshing and bursting with flavour, a classy wine which easily gives its more expensive neighbours a run for their money. It is created by the iconic Villa Maria winery, who are one of the big three players in Kiwi wine production. A long history of winemaking going all the way back to 1961 and to this day they continue to produce world class, award winning wines of serious quality. Best known for their approachable, easy drinking Sauvignon Blancs, it’s easy to see that they’ve poured every last drop of their 40 years experience into making this wine.

It’s pale lemon green in colour and has real intensity on the nose. Wonderfully ripe aromas of gooseberry, grapefruit and passion fruit explode from the glass. Then on the palate the refreshing zesty lime, gooseberry and juicy tropical fruits come to life. The fruit flavours sit alongside delicate hints of herbaceousness, as well as a touch of granite, leading you on to a mouth-watering finish and a clean crisp minerality.

This is one of those crowd pleasing wines which can happily be enjoyed on its own or alternatively, partner with smoked salmon to achieve a little touch of perfection. I can also whole-heartedly recommend pairing with crayfish, goats cheese salad or if you happen to be visiting New Zealand in the near future, the local Marlborough dish of Green shell mussels.

This wine stands head and shoulders above your standard, run-of-the-mill, kiwi Sauvignon blanc due to its extra dimension of complexity and true depth of flavour. It’s a premium quality wine at an everyday drinking price.
