Try our new Sherry range and ‘Sherry Uncovered’ Competition

This weekend, we are launching our new Sherry range – Pedro’s Sherries – and all four styles will be open to try at your local Majestic store.

When it comes to Sherry, forget that dusty bottle in your Auntie’s cupboard! Instead, think tapas, sunshine and flamenco (Jerez, the home of Sherry, is also the home of flamenco dancing)!

Sherry, a fortified wine, is made in the Andalucia region of southern Spain. Three white grape varieties are used to make Sherry – mostly Palomino, but also Moscatel and Pedro Ximenez. As well as the grapes, it’s the chalky soil, the hot, sunny climate and the traditions in the bodega that make Sherry what it is. Sherry is an exciting tipple – there are lots of different styles from bone-dry to lusciously sweet and they match so well with food.

Our four Pedro’s come from small, boutique, family-owned cellars (Almacenistas) in Jerez. Exclusive to Majestic, the Sherries are traditional and authentic in style. Pedro Dauthieu is a local man who helped us bring the range together – and he was such an asset to this project that we decided to name the range after him!

Look out for their fantastic labels and try them in-store this weekend. The labels are vintage posters from the Jerez festival in September – a selection from the 1950’s and 1960’s. It was not straightforward getting permission to use the labels from the Consejo Regulador, but Pedro knew the right man who made it happen.

Pedro’s Almacenista Selection Fino
From two different Bodegas in the centre of Jerez. It is a bone dry, with almond and fresh apple notes and hint of yeastiness. Enjoy with olives, nuts, smoked hams, shellfish, oysters, mackerel and salads. If you can resist finishing, it will keep for up to two weeks after opening.

Pedro’s Almacenista Selection Amontillado
From the Almacenista that belongs to the Garcia Jarana family, located right where flamenco dancing started. It oozes with nutty aromas, and this nuttiness follows through onto the smooth palate. Great match with hard cheeses like Manchego or Cheddar, tuna, mushroom dishes and Asian food. The Amontillado, as well as the Oloroso and Palo Cortado, will last up to a month after opening.

Pedro’s Almacenista Selection Oloroso
Like the Amontillado, the Oloroso is from the Almacenista Garcia Jarana. It is full-bodied, warm, complex and reminiscent of toasted walnuts and autumn leaves. Perfect with red meats, especially game, and with casseroles and paellas.

Pedro’s Almacenista Selection Palo Cortado
From the Almacenista Cayetano, which dates back to 1886, owned by the Del Pino family. They were the official Sherry suppliers to King Alfonso XIII. It has the delicacy on the nose of the Amontillado but the richness on the palate of the Oloroso. Enjoy alongside hard cheeses, smoked hams and winter roasts.
